These are my competencies

This is competency level for my B1.2 period. All the knobs displaying my grade for my competencies are relative, because my view on what the highest possible awareness is may change over time. If you want to compare it to my reflections on the competencies for the B1.1 period click here

Growth

If I take a look back to how I started this semester, I feel and see that I have changed and learned a lot.

I can see, while I may not yet have accomplished all my goals, that my attitude has improved. I have also made great leaps in being more responsible and taking this all more serious. I find myself now being much more oriented on what I want to do when I am working on projects or electives. While I was also having difficult times because I was quite depressed, I am now going to a psychologist once a week for EMDR. I already feel that it makes a big difference on how I feel towards studying, as I firstly had almost no motivation to do anything at all. "Strangely" I do feel myself now even wanting to do stuff for my study, because I like to do it.

Next to that do I also see enormous improvements in my Teamwork and Communication competencies, as before I did not always had a good communication between me and my teammates, I now find myself to be quite actively contacting people to get up to date with the progress that has been made. Yet in these compartments there is still plenty room for improvements, as I am still developing this.

To combat this, I started to follow the STU98 (planning) cursus, this already helped me out a lot. I am going to continue this study, if I stay at the TU/e, because it helps me alot.

"You should really change your attitude. Take you work serious and act more professional. Currently you find other things more important. These are things next to your university work. If you find it hard to handle multiple responsibilities, make choices. If you are aware that you are easily distracted, avoid extra distraction. " -Rouvroye, J.L.

Most of all did I really improve in my way of treating this study. I improved my attitude and made more work of everything that I had to do. This is something that was quite important to do, because it was one of the main reasons why I got an H.

Teamwork

During this semester did I really learn, and applied, a lot more about the Teamwork competency.

While I had a lot of trouble to focus on my part in the last project, I now had a bigger part, and did really add something to the project (Refugitives) . As for my goal "My goal towards this competency is to solve the problems that I had last semester and to be more active inside the team." -B1.1 reflection. I achieved what I wanted to reach.

There is still enough room for improvement, as I am still “good” in soemtimes forgetting important meetings and appointments. This could be one of my next goals to achieve, to be able to stop forgetting my appointments and being there on time. I want to do this via an elective/workgroup that I am already attending “stu98”, this is a workgroup for learning to and maintaining to plan.

Communication

When I was starting my B1.2 period, I was starting to go into the next project with my PDP B1.2 in my mind. I wanted to improve myself in communication over what I did in the first semester. I did this by keeping a lot of contact with my other team members of my project and my electives. It was something that was really good to do, as I found. It helped me to be more informed about the progress and to be more involved in what should happen. This experience is something that I am definitly going to take with me to the next team-projects.

Having a better communication also resulted in the team being able to progress a lot faster. While I found that the communication during the B1.2 project was far from optimal, I found that it was due to the fact that there were a lot of miscomunnications. While someone said A, another made B out of it. This is going to be an improvement point for the future. While I did not forfil my idea of being the leader of any of the group, I did learn valuable experience of how good communication does really affect the performance of your group.

Design and Research Processes

During the last semester I learned a lot about this competency, together with Ideas and Concepts. I learned this with the electives DG190 and DG125. During these electives did we have to do a lot of research. This resulted into me learning that for a lot of design choices, you have to do research for possible other projects or research that are connected to what we create.

I found this to be quite important during the designing process, and it is something that I am going to apply during upcoming projects. When you do it, it gives you an advantage in the knowledge that you have about certain subjects, and possible solutions to problems that you walk into. During the DG125 we found that the idea that we had, did already exist in some format, thus rendering the idea that we had useless. This meant that we had to come with something better, or even just upgrade our idea to an format which would grant us an big improvement over the other idea. We also found that. Soon after we presented the idea for the first time, and it receiving critique about it possibly already existing, that our idea, was presented in a couple of dutch newspapers as being a good idea for a new travel application. If we did not find this in the newspaper, we would have had less arguments on why our idea would be good.

Ideas and Concepts

In the reflections of the competencies of the last semester, I already mentioned that I was thinking too easy over the Ideas and Concepts competency. So, in this semester, I wanted to focus on getting this competency to the next level.

Therefor did I do 2 elective which focussed a lot on this competency (DG125 and DG190). During these electives, did I really learn a lot to come to new ideas and concepts. I learned new ways on getting towards concepts and to not let my instincts lead me all the way. This is something that I see as an big improvement over what I used to do, because it gives me an more objective view on what the most logical steps are to get to the best possible concept.

This is something that is really applicable in possible upcoming projects, at the TU/e or anywhere else. And it is also an eye-opener in possible improvements of already existing projects, because I can now apply these methods that I have learned to remove possible flaws in the designs.

Next to this did I also achieve a lot of goals, which I stated in my B1.2 PDP. I am now able to really use Adobe Premiere, Photoshop and Indesign to a good extend. I have made a lot of small videos which I edited with Premiere, and I also edited a lot of photos in Photoshop.

Integrating Technology

When I chose to do the Persuasive Game Design project, I wanted to improve my IT programming skills. While I had done a HTML cursus before, I still felt that I was lackluster in the C variant of programming. Therefor I wanted to fulful the role of programmer, and did exactly this.

Being one of the programmers of the game, I did really learn alot about the structure of programming. I learned how I could read codes, and most importantly where I could find possible problems. This was something that really came to me when I was already at the end of the project, because I found that I was also modding (=adjusting, changing the gameplay by altering codes) already existing games like Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 1942. I do also guess, or better said, know for sure, that when I have to work with programs or arduinos in the future, that I am now able to learn to code it way faster, because I do already have the basics in my head.

Next to that did I also do a project in my free time, in which I took my scooter apart to clean it. This helped me alot in helping to understand how an engine actually works. It also showed me how the balance between mass production and craftsmanship is in such a product. I did also improve in handling with such tools, as I had to think for an solution on how I could clean the inside of the engine, because water would not be usable.

User Focus and Perspective

While we were creating the Lumus instrument, we found that while we knew exactly how it worked, people did not know what to do at first sight. The problem back then was that we started to take user tests way to late. During this project (Refugitives) we started the usertesting way earlier. I did even started testing already when we only had the game with placeholders. This gave me enought inside into what we had to change to make the game more intuïtive. It is something that I found quite important to apply, because, as the designer self, everything is already know, yet it may be the total opposite of what it actually is in the minds of people whom do not know what it is.

During the DG125 elective did we also learn a lot about the importance of the perspective of the user on to your design. We had to take test on how people would like your idea, and how much it would help them in their daily life. While I may not do it again as we did it during this elective, it showed me how we could design our product so that it would gain in to their perspective, and thus giving the product more potential.

Socio-Cultural Awareness

When I was creating the game for Refugitives and coming up with the posters for DG190 and the visualization and of the product for DG125, I found that when you are creating things, you have to take the differences between cultures in your mind.

This means that you have to know for who you want to create your product. This means that you need to adjust your design so that it makes sense towards that group. They have to know what things mean and how them to interprent them. This competency goes hand in hand with the Design and Research Processes, because

Designing Business Processes

While I may not have paid a lot of attention towards this competency, I still learned about it in some ways which I did not expect. It came up during the DG125 elective in combination with UFP, because these to go hand in hand.

I learned how you have to apply user test to optimalise your product towards the consumer, and how that imrpoves the ability of how you can put your product on the market. The electives DG190 and DG125 did also teach me how you habe to defend your product. You have to have solid argument why your product is worth the money, and why you even want to use it.

Form and Senses

During this semester, there was not really much connected to the Form and Senses competency except for the electives (DG125 and DG190). During the electives we had to create ideas, and for these ideas, we had to make presentations which included visualizations of the ideas that we had. due to these visualizations did I learn a lot about the use of Adobe Photoshop and Premiere. This lead to the point that i was able to create all the visuals that we used in the presentations that we gave in the DG125 elective. For the DG125 elective did I also make an little movie to illustrate the idea that we had even better, to give it something that people can

Next to that did some of the visualization of the game, which also play parts in the growth of this competency. It showed me that when you are creating something that people have to get immersed in, it is better to give it the forms and colours of the natural counter parts. Because, when we were testing the very first version of the game, which only had place holders, people did not know what to do, because the placeholders had no meaning to them, and were thus not self-explenatory enough. I found, and thus learned, that designs have to have some recognition in them, to let people understand what they do. This is also something that is in line with my vision, and is thus something that makes it more stronger for me.

Descriptive & Mathematical Modelling

While this competency is quite broad, they all overlap each other. One part of the DMM competency is about being able to understand people, that may even not speak your language, by an unified "language" which everybody knows for a certain tool, program or device.

A couple of these codes are HTML, CSS and C (the game maker variant). Due to my choice in projects and electives, I have learned a lot about these three scripting styles. I have learned how to read them, and thus how to understand how they work. This is quite important as these are the same on the whole

Self-Directed and Continuous Learning

During this semester, did I really wanted to improve my SDCL capacities, as I did really let that down during the first semester. This is also something that is quite important in the Industrial Design study, as i had found in the first semester, as i did not pass any of the exams. This was due to me not being able to set myself to study for the exams.

I also found that I was quite depressed, and thus I am going to a psychologist to solve this problem, as it is quite an important factor on me being able to study. While I am now still in the treatment, I can already say that my motivation has risen a lot.

I do also feel that my reflections are getting better, as stated in feedback that I got upon my DG190 elective: "Another aspect which I want to stress, because it is rarely done well: I really appreciate the first two paragraphs (I am not counting the sentence in the middle). These are very well structured, starting from a fact or a practical comment, and progressively yet rapidly abstracting and proposing a short and to-the-point reflection. This is well done and is very convincing. Well done!" -Levy, P.D.

I feel that I have changed and learned a lot during this (school)year. I found that when I started with this year, I didn't really have any grip on myself and thus I did not really do good during the first semester. If I compare that with who I am now, I can see big differences in the way that I focus myself on what I want to do. I have really improved in .
